setting a barometer. brand is tradtion.?
i have this barometer that i found at a thrift store. its a “traditon” brand and has therm. on it to. but it was raining outside and this thing said it was setting between fair and very dry…. the needle does move but i dont know how to set it to read right. i changed it to what the weatherman had reported to be with the screw on the back. right? wrong? can anyone helpme fine tune this thing?

The easiest way is to set it from another barometer – that’s basically what the weather report is for. Try to get a location as near to you as possible, but it’s not critical.
Remember, a barometer is not a Weather Station – the stuff around the outside (fair, rain, change) is not gospel, and you can’t rely on that alone to predict the weather. But it will show you if the pressure is rising or falling, and that tells you if a high or low pressure area is moving into your locality. High pressure usually means clear and cool, but can also mean thunderstorms.

The History of the Barometer $31.48 For two centuries the barometer has been an indispensable laboratory instrument. Yet, despite its revolutionary influence on science, W. E. Knowles Middleton here offers the first complete history of the barometer as a scientific tool. Middleton relies on research from Western European documents and manuscripts of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. He begins his story with a pre-history of the barometer, the Torricellian experiment, the subsequent experiments and controversies in the 1640s, and the barometric experiments during the remainder of the century. Later chapters are concerned with the mercury barometer as a scientific instrument, discussing the efforts to expand the scale to render the instrument portable, and to attain greater accuracy. These chapters follow accounts of mercury barographs, the history of the corrections to the barometer, the history of the mercury barometer in North America, and the luminescence that appears when a barometer is moved in the dark. The final chapters discuss barometers other than those using the weight of a column of mercury. A large number of the more interesting barometers seen by the author in his extensive travels appears in the appendix. Barometer and Weather Guide (Dodo Press) $13.98 Vice-Admiral Robert FitzRoy (1805-1865) achieved lasting fame as the captain of HMS Beagle during Charles Darwin’s famous voyage, and as a pioneering meteorologist who made accurate weather forecasting a reality. He was an able surveyor and hydrographer and served as Governor of New Zealand from 1843 to 1845. In 1818, 12 years old, he entered the Royal Naval College, Portsmouth, and in the following year he entered the Royal Navy. He completed his course with distinction and was promoted lieutenant in 1824, having passed the examination with ‘full numbers’ (100%), a result not achieved previously. After serving on HMS Thetis, in 1828 he was appointed flag lieutenant to Rear-Admiral Sir Robert Waller Otway, commander-in-chief of the South American station, aboard HMS Ganges. In 1831 he stood as Tory candidate for Ipswich in the General Election, but was defeated. FitzRoy was awarded a gold medal by the Royal Geographical Society in 1837. His works include: Barometer and Weather Guide (1859) and Narrative of the Surveying Voyages of His Majesty’s Ships Adventure and Beagle Between the Years 1826 and 1836. |
