Difference between grid references – nautical V mountaineering?
Hi All,
I notice from sample grid references given on marine charts and ordnance survey charts that tehre seems to be a difference in giving grid refs. I’m sure I must be making a mistake. However, my ordnance survey map’s sample grid ref says to give eastings first, then northings. However, the same on my Nautical Chart gives latitude first (northings) then longitude. Am I somehow getting confused? It doesn;t make sense that they contradict each other.

mountaineering uses geographical i.e. the cartesian coordinate system for example ordance survey maps whilst nautical uses degrees and ratios in nautical miles. The bottom link shows how these are transposed.
