Destin, Florida – A Great Little Fishing Town With Beaches Your Family Will Love
Destin has been a longtime favorite of fishermen, in fact it started as a humble fishing village and today is touted as the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village” they also claim to have the largest, best equipped fishing fleet in Florida docked in Destin Harbor, which is great because we love fresh caught seafood.
Off shore fishing is excellent with close access to Gulf of Mexico via the 100 Fathom Curve which is closer to Destin than any other spot in Florida, making it the fastest way to get to the deeper waters in the Gulf where the best fish are. You can charter a boat and go after a big Blue Marlin, this is the best place in Florida to catch them, Dolphin (mahi-mahi), Wahoo and Sailfish are also caught during late spring and summer.
If you like to fish in shore you can catch Cobia and Kingfish; bottom fishing is also good, grouper and snapper are commonly caught. You dont even necessarily need a charter a big boat to fish in shore or bottom either, fish can be caught from small boats and even kayaks launched from the beach. Choctawhatchee Bay is another great place to fish in the area; trout, redfish and black drum are commonly caught in the Bay. Even if you dont like to fish the bay is beautiful and a great place to spend the day on the water but be sure to bring your sunscreen the last thing youll want to take home is a nasty sunburn.
The East Pass, which is also called Destin Pass, has the only outlet of Choctawhatchee Bay into the Gulf of Mexico. The west side of Destin Pass is accessible to the public; they have a great beach there which is beautiful and remote if you want to get away from the crowd.
Destin is a popular vacation spot and a big resort town with beautiful hotels and resorts that the whole family will enjoy. They have also have places you can rent by the week, which is what we did, with many places right on the ocean. About 4.5 million people visit the area every year and we were happy to be two of them. They have family amusement parks with go-carts, miniature golf, thrill rides, and even bungee jumping. We also saw at least a dozen well manicured golf courses and just as many tennis courts.
If you like to shop they have these great little outdoor malls that are cleverly disguised as quaint wood framed buildings that hold all the latest designer brands and labels; it reminded me of being in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
One of the things we liked best about Destin was the food. The dining in Destin is as diverse as it is delicious; restaurants here range from jacket and tie fine dining overlooking the Bay to flip-flops and cut offs oyster bars overlooking the Gulf. Most, we were delight to find, have live entertainment; everything from classical pianos playing to local bands to jukeboxes. Seafood is the natural choice, because it’s not uncommon to see restaurant marquees inviting you to come in and enjoy the fresh catch from the night before, but they have a little bit of everything including Caribbean style.
So next time youre in the Panhandle be sure to get over to Destin, its a great little seaside town where you can fish, surf, parasail, golf or shop. You can spend the day on the beach then spend the night out having some family fun and most of all enjoy the seafood.
About the Author

The Dory Fleet of Pacific City $17.48 With its smooth, sandy beach, the quiet coastal town of Pacific City, on the coast of Oregonas Tillamook County, is the perfect home for a unique group of boats. The Pacific City dory fleet has a proud history spanning more than 100 years. Nestled in the natural shelter provided by Cape Kiwanda, the fleet lives on today as one of the most interesting fishing fleets in the world. The small flat-bottomed boats dare the ocean as they crash through the surf headed for the plentiful waters of the Pacific. At dayas end, they ride the waves back to shore and slide onto the beach. The original design of the dory allows it to launch from and land on the shore. Through the inherent dangers of ocean fishing, governmental restriction, international fishing competition, and, most recently, the influx of surfers and civilization, the dedicated fishermen have held on to tradition. |

Gunfish: A Fleet Submarine Goes to War $19.98 "Battle Stations–Gun Action " Ensign Charley Jason, a Reserve officer faces the searing experience of submarine warfare in the Pacific. When a Fleet type submarine went to war in the Pacific it operated mainly on the surface, attacking convoys at night, always heavily escorted as well as single vessels, rescuing downed fliers during intense air battles and shooting up enemy trawlers, junks, fishing boats and sampans. Often it had to fight to rescue downed pilots with the submarine at total risk during such daytime actions. |

White-Tipped Orange Masts: The Gloucester Dragger Fleet That Is No More $18.98 Netting shrimp in the icy waters off Cape Ann, hauling up lobster two hundred miles offshore, in the 1970s Gloucester’s eastern-rig side trawlers were at the top of a dying and dangerous industry. In the tough competition for the daily catch, Gloucester’s dragger fleets were the best. They went out farther, stayed out longer, and risked all as the fishing grounds grew lean. Author Peter Prybot captures the glory days of the draggers through recollections and his own firsthand observations as a lifelong Gloucester fisherman. Terrible weather, good fishing, bad fishing, great days and greater danger– these are true stories from the decks of the celebrated trawler fleet that is no more. |

Whaling and Fishing $28.48 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: WHALING AND FISHING. CHAPTER I. ‘ Whalemen Wanted ?A Whaling Shipping Office? The Man- of-wars-man?The Merchant Seamen? The Whaleman?Talk with the Shipper?I Determine on a, Whaling Cruise?Go to New Bedford. " Landsmen Wanted One Thousand Stout Young Men, Americans, Wanted for the fleet of whaleships, now fitting out for the North and South Pacific Fisheries. "Extra chances given to Coopers, Carpenters and Blacksmiths. " None but industrious young men, with good recommendations, taken. Such will have superior chances for advancement. " Outfits, to the amount of Seventy-five Dollaes furnished to each individual, before proceeding to sea. " Persons desirous to avail themselves of tlie present splendid opportunity of seeing the world, and at the same time acquiring a profitable business, will do well to make early application to the undersigned." Such were the contents of a flaring poster, whose bright capitals caught my eye, as one morning I was rambling with a shipmate along South street, on the East Eiver side of New York. Such notices are no rarity in the Eastern seaports. " Whale crews " are in almost constant demand, and these " Wants " and " Fine Chances," stare one in the face on nearly every street corner. They are the lures by means of which the farm-boys, the factory-boys, and the city-boys are drawn to the net of the shipper. The very hopeful, and delightful, but somewhat overdrawn picture of a whaleman’s life, here in few words set forth, has enticed many a tolerably honest, but withal lazy lad to seek the shipper’s office, and engage himself for a three or four years cruise. To a sailor this avenue to a whaleship is hermetically sealed. Neither here nor in New Bedford is he at all likely to be shipped ? for experience has taught the captains a… |

Spirit of the Nikkei Fleet: BC’s Japanese Canadian Fishermen $39.48 "Spirit of the Nikkei Fleet" is an intimate collection of stories of Japanese Canadians on the water, from the first Japanese immigrant’s arrival in 1877 to the present day. The 130-year history of the Nikkei is full of drama, violence, epic struggles against injustice, failures and triumphs. Leaving Japan to escape a life of poverty, they arrived in Canada with dreams for a better future. Collectively, they brought old skills and made many innovations. Fishing for a living is hard but Nikkei fishermen faced additional barriers. Opposition from other fishermen and government, and racist policies sought to exclude them from the fishery entirely. During World War II all Japanese fishermen were forcibly relocated from the coast and their livelihoods taken away. Here are the real lives of Nikkei fishermen and their families told in their words. Even in the face of inequity, prejudice and inhumanity, the spirit of the Nikkei fishermen has left a legacy. "Spirit of the Nikkei Fleet" is the story of ordinary people who possess an indomitable spirit. The Nikkei Fishermen Reunion Committee first made the call for fishermen and their families to share their stories, knowledge, skills and time in 2001. The committee includes: Shigeaki Kamachi, Paul Kariya, Takemi Miyazaki, Toshio Murao, Dan Nomura, Richard Nomura (chair), Terry Sakai, Ken Takahashi and George Murakami. The committee contributed their personal experiences, encouraged others to add their stories and served as a sounding board for the writing of the "Spirit of the Nikkei Fleet." |

Gloucester on the Wind:: America’s Greatest Fishing Port in the Days of Sail $15.48 Since the development of photography in the mid-nineteenth century, the camera has been used as a tool of both discovery and preservation. Photographs bring alive our image of the past, and can open a floodgate of memories and nostalgia or inspire curiosity and a sense of history. Originally founded by a fishing company from Dorchester, England, in 1623, Gloucester has always been linked to fishing and the sea. By 1870 Gloucester was the leading fishing port in the Western Hemisphere, and its great fleet of fast, white-winged schooners ranged deep into the heart of the Atlantic in search of cod, haddock, halibut, and mackerel. These stunningly beautiful ships and the hardy men who sailed them made "Gloucester" an evocation of courage, perseverance, and seamanship unique in America’s maritime heritage. |
