Destin, Florida – A Great Little Fishing Town With Beaches Your Family Will Love

Destin has been a longtime favorite of fishermen, in fact it started as a humble fishing village and today is touted as the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village” they also claim to have the largest, best equipped fishing fleet in Florida docked in Destin Harbor, which is great because we love fresh caught seafood.

Off shore fishing is excellent with close access to Gulf of Mexico via the 100 Fathom Curve which is closer to Destin than any other spot in Florida, making it the fastest way to get to the deeper waters in the Gulf where the best fish are. You can charter a boat and go after a big Blue Marlin, this is the best place in Florida to catch them, Dolphin (mahi-mahi), Wahoo and Sailfish are also caught during late spring and summer.

If you like to fish in shore you can catch Cobia and Kingfish; bottom fishing is also good, grouper and snapper are commonly caught. You dont even necessarily need a charter a big boat to fish in shore or bottom either, fish can be caught from small boats and even kayaks launched from the beach. Choctawhatchee Bay is another great place to fish in the area; trout, redfish and black drum are commonly caught in the Bay. Even if you dont like to fish the bay is beautiful and a great place to spend the day on the water but be sure to bring your sunscreen the last thing youll want to take home is a nasty sunburn.

The East Pass, which is also called Destin Pass, has the only outlet of Choctawhatchee Bay into the Gulf of Mexico. The west side of Destin Pass is accessible to the public; they have a great beach there which is beautiful and remote if you want to get away from the crowd.

Destin is a popular vacation spot and a big resort town with beautiful hotels and resorts that the whole family will enjoy. They have also have places you can rent by the week, which is what we did, with many places right on the ocean. About 4.5 million people visit the area every year and we were happy to be two of them. They have family amusement parks with go-carts, miniature golf, thrill rides, and even bungee jumping. We also saw at least a dozen well manicured golf courses and just as many tennis courts.

If you like to shop they have these great little outdoor malls that are cleverly disguised as quaint wood framed buildings that hold all the latest designer brands and labels; it reminded me of being in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

One of the things we liked best about Destin was the food. The dining in Destin is as diverse as it is delicious; restaurants here range from jacket and tie fine dining overlooking the Bay to flip-flops and cut offs oyster bars overlooking the Gulf. Most, we were delight to find, have live entertainment; everything from classical pianos playing to local bands to jukeboxes. Seafood is the natural choice, because it’s not uncommon to see restaurant marquees inviting you to come in and enjoy the fresh catch from the night before, but they have a little bit of everything including Caribbean style.

So next time youre in the Panhandle be sure to get over to Destin, its a great little seaside town where you can fish, surf, parasail, golf or shop. You can spend the day on the beach then spend the night out having some family fun and most of all enjoy the seafood.

In part a documentary on the change and decline of the fishing industry, in part an exploration of folk song and traditions, Singing the Fishing is one of the best of the radio ballads that Ewan MacColl, Peggy Seeger, and Charles Parker developed. Thanks in part to the fine singing of Yarmouth native Sam Larner, who began working on fishing boats in the 19th century, and remembered the age of sail, this becomes both a comprehensive and impressionistic history, starting in Yarmouth, and then, after the introduction of the diesel fishing fleet, moves up to Scotland, where the North Sea fleet made its home. The songs and narration cover every aspect of fishing, from signing on to the boats after leaving school to bringing the catch home, with, of course, plenty about the time on the boats. There are plenty of sound effects — most gathered on the boats by the principals — to keep everything very much alive, and there’s a real sense of depth in talking to the fishermens’ wives, the ones who wait and hope at home. As usual, MacColl proves himself to be an exemplary songwriter, gleaning his material from the fabric of real lives. Borrowing from ageless folk and classic rock (and nicking some of the best bits from prog and soft rock along the way), on their self-titled debut album Fleet Foxes don’t just master the art of taking familiar influences and making them sound fresh again, they give a striking sense of who they are and what their world is like. Their song titles reference the Blue Ridge Mountains — never mind that they’re actually from Seattle — but it’s the ease and skill with which they mix and match British and American folk and rock from the far and not too distant past that makes the band’s music so refreshing. While this mix could be contrived or indulgent, Fleet Foxes use restraint, structuring their flourishes into three- and four-minute pop songs full of chiming melodies and harmonies that sound like they’ve been summoned from centuries of traditional songs and are full of vivid, universal imagery: mountains, birds, family, death. Despite drawing from so many sources, there’s a striking purity to Fleet Foxes’ sound. Robin Pecknold’s voice is warm and sweet, with just enough grit to make phrases like “premonition of my death” sound genuine, and the band’s harmonies sound natural, and stunning, whether they’re on their own or supported by acoustic guitars or the full, plugged-in band. “Tiger Mountain Peasant Song” and “Meadowlarks” show just how much the Foxes do with the simplest elements of their music, but Fleet Foxes’ best songs marry that purity with twists that open their sound much wider. As good as the Sun Giant EP was, Fleet Foxes saved many of their best songs for this album. “White Winter Hymnal” is remarkably beautiful, building from a vocal round into glorious jangle pop with big, booming drums that lend a sense of adventure as the spine-tingling melody lightens some of the lyrics’ darkness (“Michael you would fall and turn the white snow red as strawberries in summertime”). The suite-like “Ragged Wood” moves from a galloping beat to sparkling acoustic picking, then takes a trippy detour before returning to a more thoughtful version of its main theme. “Quiet Houses” and “He Doesn’t Know Why”‘s driving pianos show off the band’s flair for drama. Dazzling songs like these are surrounded by a few songs that find the band leaning a little more heavily on its influences. “Your Protector” nods to Zeppelin’s misty, mournful side, and “Blue Ridge Mountains” is the kind of earthy yet sophisticated song CSNY would have been proud to call their own. But, even when the songs aren’t as brilliant as Fleet Foxes’ highlights, the band still sounds alluring, as on the lush interlude “Heard Them Stirring.” Throughout the album, the band sounds wise beyond its years, so it’s not really that surprising that Fleet Foxes is such a satisfying, self-assured debut. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi Performers: Gwil Owen – Flute
