Looking for a Ship

Looking for a Ship

$3.48

This is an extraordinary tale of life aboard what may be one of the last American merchant ships. As the story begins, Andy Chase, who holds a license as a second mate is looking for a ship. In less than ten years, the United States Merchant Marine has shrunk from more than two thousand ships to fewer than four hundred, and Chase faces the scarcity of jobs from which all American merchant mariners have been suffering. With John McPhee along, Chase finds a job as a second mate aboard the S.S. Stella Lykes, captained by the extraordinary Paul McHenry Washburn. The journey takes them on a forty-two day run down the Pacific coast of South America, with stops to unload and pick up freight at such ports as Cartagena, Valparaiso, Balboa, Lima, and Guayaquil–an area notorious for pirates. As the crew make their ocean voyage, they tell sea stories of other runs and other ships, tales of disaster, stupidity, greed, generosity, and courage. Through the journey itself and the tales told emerge the history and character of a fascinating calling.

Nuclear Propulsion for Merchant Ships

Nuclear Propulsion for Merchant Ships

$88.98

The book was written for anyone interested in the subject. It should be specially helpful to designers and builders of ships, marine engineers, operators, shippers, managers, government officials, lawyers, and underwriters. It will also appeal to others, including nuclear scientists and engineers, scientists and engineers in other fields, teachers, students, and writers. The first two chapters furnish orientation on the subject of nuclear ships, and the third provides technical background for readers with no background in nuclear science. Logically, the longest chapter in the book (Chap. 4) is devoted to the Savannah herself. Several succeeding chapters cover precautions taken in design, construction, and operation to ensure safety. In this aspect of the ship development, the history of nuclear central-station plants seems to be repeating itself: in unknown areas it is better to take many precautions that later will be found unnecessary than to run the risk of not taking the one safety measure that might prove essential. Fueling nuclear ships, very different from taking on fuel oil, is covered in Chap. 7, and the extensive training of the crew in nuclear technology and reactor operation is described in Chap. 8. Concluding chapters cover international aspects of nuclear merchant-ship propulsion such as handling in other ports, safety standards, and insurance; the suitability of different reactors; and economics. The last two chapters are devoted to nuclear tanker design, since it appears that the first economic application may be for large tankers operating long distances, and to nuclear ship activities elsewhere in the world including the Russian icebreaker Lenin.

Cruise Ship

Cruise Ship

$41.98

Atlantic passenger liner, RMS Queen of Dalriada, embarks on a short cruise out of Southampton to Lisbon, Las Palmas on Gran Canaria, and Funchal, Madeira. The voyage goes well, if one can discount a bomb threat and a hit man stalking his victim, until the vessel departs from Funchal when an entity from Earth’s distant past imbues a young Scottish engineer’s mind. The consciousness of this Sasquatch or Bigfoot is displeased by the way Man has mismanaged our world. But our globe’s environment in January 1962 is too cold for the creature to set things to right – both with nature and the human race. Sixty years must pass before it will rise like a phoenix out of Saline Bay in the Bailiwick of Guernsey when a former engineroom rating recalls certain happenings on that ill-fated voyage. This novel, a sequel to Hang on a Second , gives the reader an insight to life aboard merchant ships during the early sixties. Ribald humour, romance, murder, and excitement carry this story along to its conclusion

The Ship That Would Not Die (Hardcover)

The Ship That Would Not Die (Hardcover)

$17.79

Starting its life as an attack transport in World War II—and one of the last five left afloat by war’s end—the USS Queens saw action at Iwo Jima and other hot spots in the Pacific theater. After the war, the ship became the SS Excambion, one of the “Four Aces” of American Export Lines: the only fully air-conditioned ships in the world at the time. In 1965, the versatile Excambion underwent yet another transformation—into a floating classroom. Recommissioned as the USTS Texas Clipper, the ship began a third life as a merchant marine training vessel with its home port in Galveston. For the next three decades the Texas Clipper would be home to merchant marine cadets, and by the time it was retired in 1996, it was the oldest active ship in the U.S. merchant marine fleet. Finally, the Texas Clipper, after protracted bureaucratic wrangling, was designated to be sunk in the Gulf of Mexico as an artificial reef to provide habitat for marine life. In 2009, the ship was towed to its final resting place, seventeen nautical miles off the coast of South Padre Island. Now, 136 feet below the surface, the venerable Texas Clipper lives on as the home to a wide variety of underwater species. Filled not only with meticulously researched technical and historical data about the ship’s construction, service record, crew procedures, and voyages, The Ship That Would Not Die also features lively anecdotes from crew members, passengers, and officers. More than 140 color and black-and-white photos illustrate the ship’s construction, its wide variety of shipboard life, the exacting process of making the Texas Clipper ready to become an artificial reef, and its final sinking in the Gulf of Mexico.

Vacation Adventures on a Cargo Ship

Vacation Adventures on a Cargo Ship

$9.48

Imagine embarking on a two-month ocean adventure to some of the most storied and exotic places on earth: from Hamburg through the North Sea, the Mediterranean, the Suez Canal, across the bottom of Asia to ports in South Korea and China, and back Or from Savannah, Georgia, across the South Pacific to Australia and New Zealand The world of maritime commerce unfolds before your eyes in bustling ports and historic sea lanes. Aboard ship is a small group of passengers who become part of the shipboard village, mingling with the ship’s officers and crew in their floating home away from home, reminiscent of the days when merchant ships carried a few paying passengers from port to port. In "Vacation Adventures on a Cargo Ship," Adrian Peetoom recounts his voyages aboard the container ships "Ville d’Aquarius" and "Sydney Star," Adrian and his wife, Johanna, had long been fascinated by cargo ship travel as a way to journey to foreign ports at a much more reasonable cost than the trips offered by large cruise ship companies. After Adrian retired from his publishing career, the couple embarked on two voyages. What Adrian and Johanna experienced will fascinate armchair travellers and those who may be interested in investigating container ship travel for themselves. Peetoom’s love of the sea informs his narrative, which is in many ways a spiritual, as well as a physical, journey. He reflects on his maritime heritage, instilled in him as a child in his Dutch homeland, and on the significant role his country played as a colonial merchant power. "Vacation Adventures on a Cargo Ship" includes an appendix with helpful tips and booking information for those readers inspired by thebook to make further inquiries about container ship travel.

Robin Hobb’s acclaimed Farseer trilogy–"Assassin’s Apprentice, Royal Assassin, and Assassin’s Quest–"wove a spellbinding tale of magic, passion, and glory. Now, in the first book of a new trilogy set in the same world, she tells the magnificent story of a proud seafaring clan and the enchanted ships that carry them on far-flung, ferocious tides…. Not far from the Six Duchies lies Bingtown, hub of exotic trade and home to a merchant nobility famed for its liveships–rare vessels carved from wizardwood, which ripens magically into sentient awareness. Bingtown’s Old Traders, their wealth eroded by northern wars and the rapacity of southern pirates, now face an influx of upstart merchants who bring change to a complex society. The Vestrit family’s only hope of renewed prosperity is the "Vivacia," a liveship they have nurtured for three generations. Now, as old Captain Vestrit lies dying in Bingtown, the "Vivacia" cuts homeward through the waves, about to quicken into a living being. The ship carries Vestrit’s daughter Althea and the conniving son-in-law he has named as the "Vivacia"’s next captain. But lovely, wild-spirited Althea, sailing the "Vivacia" with her father since childhood and sharing its half-awakened memories and ocean secrets, has bonded with the ship in her deepest soul. Joined by Brashen–her father’s first mate, now demoted by the "Vivacia"’s new commander–she will stop at nothing in a bitter quest to claim its captaincy. Meanwhile, in the rocky cays known as the Pirate Isles, a ruthless man lusts after his own kind of power. The pirate captain Kennit, in his scheme to be king of this outlaw realm, has vowed that he will wrest a liveship from itsowners and turn it to his own use. His twisted ambition will bring him into a strange partnership with a boy-priest turned seaman–and into violent conflict with the wizardwood magic of Althea and Brashen. From the peculiar magic realm of the Others to the bawdy, raucous lair of the pirates, "Ship of Magic" sweeps a dazzling cast of characters into an epic of terrible beauty and mysterious sorcery.

'Leave Your Sleep' is an inspired return for Merchant, her first studio album in six years – an effort long awaited by her considerable fan base. It also marks her 25th year as a uniquely successful major-label artist, one whose work has consistently enjoyed equal measures of commercial and critical success. Though she has regularly lent her talents over the last few years to the many nonprofit causes she supports, Merchant has actively returned to the concert stage in recent months, previewing material from 'Leave Your Sleep,' on a series of dates in England and continental Europe. A full U.S. tour is being planned for summer 2010. Captain Frederick Marryat (1792-1848) was an English novelist, a contemporary and acquaintance of Charles Dickens, noted today as an early pioneer of the sea story. He is now known particularly for the semi-autobiographical novel Mr Midshipman Easy (1836) and his children’s novel The Children of the New Forest (1847). After trying to run away to sea several times, he was permitted to enter the Royal Navy in 1806, as a midshipman on board HMS Imperieuse. In 1829 he was commanding the frigate HMS Ariadne on a mission to search for shoals around the Madeira and Canary Islands. This was an uninspiring exercise, and between that and the recent publication of his first novel, The Naval Officer (1829) he decided to resign his commission and take up writing full time. Other works include The King’s Own (1830), Newton Forster; or, The Merchant Service (1832), Peter Simple, and The Three Cutters (1834), Jacob Faithful (1834), The Pacha of Many Tales (1835), Japhet, in Search of a Father (1836), The Pirate (1836), The Phantom Ship (1839), Poor Jack (1840), Masterman Ready (1841), Percival Keene (1842), The Privateersman (1846) and The Mission; or, Scenes in Africa (1845).

Woody, Cisco, & Me: Seamen Three in the Merchant Marine

Woody, Cisco, & Me: Seamen Three in the Merchant Marine

$13.48

Attorney and playwright Longhi recalls his three voyages as a merchant marine during World War II in the company of folk music legends Woody Guthrie and Cisco Houston. Despite some occasionally stilted dialog, Longhi’s fast-paced memoir reads like a novel as the "seamen three" survive rough storms, crooked gamblers, and two torpedo attacks. Of the vivid cast of characters, the irrepressible Guthrie is the most compelling, though he sometimes drifts to the background as Longhi relates his own often hilarious exploits as ship’s baker and chairman of the crew’s union. (For a solid Guthrie biography, see Joe Klein’s Woody Guthrie, LJ 10/15/80, still available in paperback.) Still, Guthrie’s folksy persona looms above all others. With Guthrie and Houston long since dead, it is left to Longhi to tell stories that have only been hinted at in previous Guthrie biographies. Highly recommended.?Lloyd Jansen, Stockton- San Joaquin Cty. P.L

American Merchant Ships on the Yangtze, 1920-1941

American Merchant Ships on the Yangtze, 1920-1941

$139.48

This work describes the activities of a handful of American companies and about eighty American captains who were trying to run ships on China’s great river during the treacherous days between the two world wars. The considerable physical dangers of the Yangtze itself were compounded by the greater human hazards imposed by constant fighting among warlords, piracy, brigandry, kidnapping, opium and munitions smuggling, corruption, seizures, and other forms of intimidation. The events recall–and surpass–anything of the "Wild West" in American frontier history. No American steamship company survived longer than twelve years in this environment, but Standard Oil, which was sheltered from the worst of the violence, was able to operate its ships throughout the entire period. More than a naval/military, or even economic, history, this book is also a commentary on a significant but largely unsuccessful American commercial venture overseas–one that was eventually scuttled by the actions of the Chinese and the American companies themselves. Ship buffs, maritime historians, students of the evolution of modern China, and those interested in American commercial history will find this study useful and entertaining.

The Ghost Ship & Others

The Ghost Ship & Others

Richard Barnham Middleton’s "The Ghost Ship" is one of the best-loved ghost stories in English literature, about which Arthur Machen wrote, "I declare I would not exchange this short, crazy, enchanting fantasy for a whole wilderness of seemly novels." Middleton himself (1882-1911) was a tragic figure, a young man impatient for success, who managed to live the archetypal life of the Romantic Bohemian poet, complete with poverty, unrequited love for an impossible woman (a prostitute), despair, and an early suicide. While he published many pieces in the best magazines of the day, no volumes of his work were published in his lifetime. As soon as he was dead, he was "discovered." Four volumes of his collected works were in print within eighteen months. Three more followed in the next two decades. His poetry was acclaimed in the press as a new Keats, both for the brilliance of his work and the brevity of his life. He is remembered today for a handful of superbly crafted, eerie fantasies, such as "The Coffin Merchant," "On the Brighton Road," and "The Conjurer," which only hint at the richness of the larger body of his work, and suggest what kind of a literary artist he would have become if he had lived.

Life Aboard a Wartime Liberty Ship

Life Aboard a Wartime Liberty Ship

$53.98

Liberty Ships were Cargo ships built by the Americans for the British to run cargo during World War 2. They were initially commissioned to replace those ships lost in early U-Boat raids. From 1943 until 1951, Ian Malcolm was a radio officer/purser with Alfred Holt and Co., owners of the Blue Funnel Line and the Glen Line. The voyages on the Liberty Ships Samite and Samforth, described in the book, were made in wartime and followed by a year on the Samnesse: trading mainly between Italy and East Africa. Subsequent voyages were made to the Continent, Far East, Australia and Indonesia. His first ship was, on two occasions, prevented from passing through the Mediterranean. These incidents are, of course, described, but the book deals mainly with life on board his ships and how he spent the, sometimes, prolonged spells in port. The story begins with his entrance into the Merchant Navy as a radio officer and crossing to Canada on the Queen Elizabeth to join the Samite, in Baltimore. During the Samite’s fifteen-month voyage, she called at various ports in the USA and North Africa while his next ship, the Samforth, on her ten-month voyage, visited Canada, the USA, Egypt, Arabia, India, Mozambique, Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Norway and Finland.

The Way of the Ship: America’s Maritime History Reenvisioned, 1600-2000

$22.98

The history of shipping in America, as traditionally recounted, is based primarily on the fortunes of the American merchant marine. This book offers a global perspective and considers oceanic shipping "and" domestic shipping along America’s coasts and inland waterways, with explanations of the forces that influenced the way of the ship. The result is an eye-opening look at American maritime history and the ways it helped shaped the nation’s history. It features beautiful color images of paintings by today’s premier marine artist, John Stobart.

At sea at last?Hunting a mess?-Some’ account of the vessel and her crew. ON the 4th of June, 18?, we finally hoisted sail and steered through the Narrows, seaward bound. But we Were still destined to delay. Owing to our heavy draught (twenty-seven feet), we were obliged to take advantage of the highest or spring tides, to make our way out. While going along with a steamboat ahead, it was found necessary to hold her with the anchor a few moments, and the order was accordingly given: " Let go the starboard anchor." In the general confusion, no one being yet statiened, the chain stoppers were not sufficiently manned, and the tick- carrying the ship along with great force, the starboard chain ran out end for end, and was, with its anchor, lost overboard. The other anchor was immediately let go, and safely held her. This made an all night’s job of work for all hands, to pick up the lost chain and anchor. Besides this, the untoward accident was regarded by many of the old salts as an evil omen, and prophecies of future disasters, inaugurated by this, were not wanting on all sides. But we were too busied with the present to care much about the future. By daylight we had recovered our anchor and chain, and shortly after, the tide serving, we stood out to sea.As soon as the ship was fairly under weigh, the decks cleared, and the hurry and bustle over, I ventured on deck. My limbs were yet weak, nnd the dancing motion of the vessel, as she bounded along under a stiff topgallant breeze, made it hard work for me to get along. But by dint of clinging to the guns, the stanchions, and ladders, I at length succeeded in reaching the upper deck. As I saw the land gradually receding from view, and felt the fresh sea breeze fanning my wasted cheek, I first began to re…
