Plimsoll Line

What is the difference in observing a plimsoll line on a boat which is on sea as compared to it on a river?
The plimsoll line, which shows the depth of a ship in the water, will be higher relative to the water’s surface when the ship is on saltwater (as on the sea) than freshwater (as on a river) because of the increased buoyancy provided by the dissolved salts in saltwater.

Everywhere at Once $2.30 Even the musical wasteland that was the ’80s did offer up a few beacons of hope, and LA power-poppers the Plimsouls were one of them. Granted, they’re primarily known for one song, “A Million Miles Away,” one of the decade’s musical highlights, but they had a lot more good material up their sleeve. “Shaky City,” the title track, and “Play the Breaks,” also stand out, and the quality never dips bel… |

The Line $14.98 An "utterly brilliant" ("Library Journal") new novel from the author of the award-winning "The Dream Life of Sukhanov." The line begins to form on the whispered rumor that a famous exiled composer is returning to Russia to conduct his last symphony. Tickets will be limited. The concert date unknown. Nameless strangers join the line, jostling for preferred position. But as the seasons change and the kiosk remains shuttered, these anonymous souls evolve into a community. Bound together in their longing for something wonderful and miraculous, they allow themselves to dream. An utterly transformative work that speaks to the endurance of the human spirit, The Line confirms Grushin’s place in the pantheon of today’s most important new writers. |

Line by Line $9.58 John Patitucci’s Line by Line is mostly a quiet and thoughtful affair. The performances often feature close interplay between the bassist and guitarist Adam Rogers, with stimulating support from drummer Brian Blade and occasional guest appearances by the great tenor Chris Potter. The music is adventurous but often lyrical, with Patitucci being a key soloist but not completely dominating the performances, giving his sidemen plenty of space of their own. It is interesting to hear the mellow-toned Rogers rocking out a bit on Thelonious Monk’s “Evidence.” In addition to a Patitucci-Rogers duet on “Nana” and a closing solo electric bass solo on “Tone Poem,” two selections add a string quartet and one has a string quintet. Of these, “Theme and Variations for 6-String Bass and Strings” is a major third stream work that reminds listeners that John Patitucci is a very skilled composer in addition to being one of jazz’s finest bassists. Recommended. This CD was nominated in 2007 for a Grammy award as Best Jazz Instrumental Album (Individual or Group). ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi Performers: John Patitucci – 6-String Bass, Double Bass, Bass (Acoustic); Jeremy McCoy – Double Bass; Lawrence Dutton – Viola; Sachi Patitucci – Cello; Adam Rogers – Guitar (Nylon String), Guitar (Electric); Brian Blade – Drums; Chris Potter – Sax (Tenor); Elizabeth Lim Dutton – Violin; Richard Rood – Violin |
